Faith Postmodern

For us in the postmodern world 'faith' has become a word without definition. It is a word that has been hijacked by the ridiculous and thus rejected by the thinkers. Belief and religion cause even more of a reaction of ridicule and scorn. Postmodern thinking does not have room for the steadiness and restriction of the religion of our ancestors.

By definition
Postmodernism ~ "a reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific, or objective, efforts to explain reality.... For this reason, postmodernism is highly skeptical of explanations which claim to be valid for all groups, cultures, traditions, or races, and instead focuses on the relative truths of each person." PBS Postmodernism (Retrieved 12/31/2008)

Faith ~ "1 a: allegiance to duty or a person... 2 a (1): belief and trust in and loyalty to God (2): belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion b (1): firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2): complete trust " Merriam-Webster's OnLine Dictionary (Retrieved 12/31/2008)

As you can see, these two ways of thinking are naturally at odds with one another.

But I think there is still a draw to faith. Why? Because it saturates the culture. And this continued prevalence is more than the language. I think there is a need, a natural need to believe in the unbelievable, to connect to others through the unseen, to live outside what is obvious.

What is different is how those of us who are products of postmodern thinking relate to the traditional means of expressing faith. And this is what I'm interested in. Do you live by faith? Is it one set faith? Have you made up your own? What has caused you to reject religion? What has caused you to embrace religion?

Through this blog, I am hoping for dialogue. A true discussion/debate on what postmodern faith is. Because it is through debate and comparison that one is better able to define her own faith. And we just don't honestly debate enough.

Please make this a spot where you share your ideas on faith, religion and belief. Be willing to voice your belief while being respectful of the beliefs of others.

Welcome to Faith Postmodern.
